Timo Werner opens door on Man Utd transfer as Liverpool worries come to light

Liverpool and Manchester United have been regularly linked with making a move for RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner this summer. The 24-year-old has a relatively cheap £51million release clause which must be activated by April.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will be without Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah for large periods of next season because of the African Cup of Nations and Tokyo Olympic Games.

Meanwhile, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has yet to find a replacement for Romelu Lukaku and is expected to bring in a star to lead the line.

“At this time in professional soccer there are two different variations,” Werner said.

“The first is to be part of a team like Liverpool or Manchester City. They have a good working team. The teams have also great coaches.

“But this is the question: do you want to go to that kind of team, because the situation is already that hard for each member and you want to be a part of it? That’s one point you have to look at.”

“The other side are teams which need some big changes, because they just won a few big titles, but they are not able to compete on the highest level anymore,” he added.

“For me Manchester United is one of these teams.

“So at this point of my career I’m asking myself: do I want to be part of a new team, to build up something new, or do I want to stay at my team and make something great?”

Werner is gearing up for Leipzig’s Champions League clash with Spurs tomorrow in which the Bundesliga side have a have a 1-0 first-leg advantage.

The German continued his rich vein of form by netting from the penalty spot in the reverse fixture.

In contrast, Spurs boss Jose Mourinho is faced with a striker crisis following injuries to Harry Kane and Heung-min Son.

That means they may be forced into playing midfielder Dele Alli up front.

Mourinho said: “I think Dele played very well against Burnley. Again it is easy to understand.

“We have Lucas [Moura] and Dele Alli and then [Eric] Lamela is a question mark, [Ryan] Sessegnon coming from an injury. These are the attacking players that we have, we don’t have others. Not easy, but we go.”
