Iron Man (played by Robert Downey Jr) remains one of the most beloved MCU superheroes, thanks in no small part to the actor’s portrayal of the character from the Marvel comics. His reign on the big screen ran from 2008 until 2019 and covered a rollercoaster of complex storylines, from his relationship with his late father to his mentoring of young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and his crucial role in the Infinity Saga. Now, filmmaker, presenter and comic book writer Kevin Smith has revealed Avengers directors Joe and Anthony Russo actually filmed a cool twist for Iron Man and Doctor Strange during production on Avengers: Infinity War.

Smith said he and his co-host Marc Bernadin were shown the image by Infinity War writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.

“There’s footage or a photo of Robert Downey Jr wearing the cape that came out long before Infinity War came out, so we know they shot it,” he explained on the latest episode of Fatman Beyond on YouTube.

“We know personally that they shot it because when the writers came and spoke to us at the house before they left they were like ‘You wanna see something?’”

Smith recalled the writers unveiling the act stills of Doctor Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch wearing the armour usually sported by his co-star Downey Jr in the role of Iron Man.

“And they pulled out the phone and literally showed us, not just a drawing, cause that’s what’s going around the internet is there’s a drawing, and it looks bad***,” Smith said. “But they showed us f***in’ Sherlock in the Iron Man f***in’ suit, man.

“Like wearing the suit, with Tony standing next to him wearing the cape, and we were like ‘WHAT THE F***,’ and they were like ‘We can’t say, never talk about it.’

“Then it’s out in the world and I’m like ‘We saw that photo!’ It looked bad***,” he added.

His comments come after concept art was revealed online which showed Doctor Strange wearing Iron Man’s suit.

Feature film concept designer Phil Saunders shared the images with his 13,000 Instagram followers, saying: “’Iron Strange’ – an idea that was cut from the script of Avengers: Infinity War.

“On the Q-Ship, Tony Stark was going to transfer his armor to Strange to protect him from Ebony Maw’s torture needles.”

After the events of Infinity War, the Avengers were left to pick up the pieces in a world decimated by The Snap, in which Thanos (played by Josh Brolin) wiped 50 per cent of the universe’s population out of existence.
